Some years ago, when I first saw the exquisitely produced art presented by the Manas Workshop on Instagram, I thought it would be wonderful to work with a company so clearly dedicated to technical quality combined with artistic mystery and eloquence. I was right!  When Manas approached me about the Yu Ren project, I was fascinated by the description of this paradoxical character as neither alive nor dead, neither god nor human, one who may be laughing or crying and we know not which. She devours living beings but also brings immortality. This description invited subtlety and encouraged imagination. I also received beautiful concept paintings by Dada Ma .  Though I was given great freedom to allow the character to evolve, these ideas and images greatly enriched the process.  While working on Yu Ren, I aimed to maintain the sense of mythic history and spiritual meaning.  Such a collaboration is almost like a work of theatre, bringing together layers of inspiration. I am honored to be part of Manas SUM’s gorgeous world.
